When passing into wearing a denture, several things will change for you.
This article will provide you with some relevant information about what you may expect, and what will be important for you paying attention to.
Aesthetics
Denture teeth are made of acrylic or porcelain. The production of porcelain is a laborious procedure, just like making the other parts of the denture.
The different perspectives of your dentist, his dental laboratory technician, and you being the patient, demand for a wide range of variety. The objective is reproducing natural teeth as good as possible. For this reason it is even possible to place small cracks or fake fillings into the teeth during the production procedure.
Because natural teeth differ from person to person, there is a wide choice available of colors and models.
Functionality
Just as important as the aesthetics, is the functionality of the denture.
In this respect we would like to mention the "OPTIFORM ® " posterior teeth.
These teeth have been developed and produced by Enta BV in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, in close co-operation with Professor Dr. W. Kalk, of the University of Groningen (the Netherlands). OPTIFORM ® posterior teeth contribute dramatically to the chewing function and the stability of your denture. These teeth have anatomical forms, and patients with heavily shrunk jaws especially benefit having these teeth.
For more information please contact your dentist or dental technician.
Oral hygiene
Cleaning your denture regularly is necessary to prevent mouth diseases that are caused by food particles remaining under the denture.
Clean the denture twice a day with a denture paste on a natural basis. Specially designed denture brushes are available in drug stores. The use of toothpaste is generally dissuaded, because some pastes are more or less abrasive. A clean denture feels smooth. Scale growing onto the denture will be difficult to remove. In that case place the denture during the night in a cup with for example natural vinegar. In the morning the scale can easily be brushed off. The use of bleach or abrasive should be dissuaded. Do not put the denture in very hot water, because deformation can occur.
Gums
Also your gums need to be cleaned. When the wounds of the extraction are not yet cured, rinse your mouth after each meal with tepid water. When healed you can clean your mouth by using a soft toothbrush with normal dentifrice.
We also recommend that you massage your palate, tongue and mucous secretion of the jaws once a day.
